What Is IP Geolocation and How Does It Work?

What IP geolocation actually identifies

IP geolocation associates an internet address with a geographic estimate. A database may return a country, region, city, postal area, timezone and latitude/longitude. Those fields describe the database’s best estimate for the network address—not a verified physical location of the person using it.

That distinction matters. An IP address belongs to a network allocation or routing context. It can be used by a home router, a mobile carrier gateway, a cloud server, a VPN endpoint or thousands of users behind shared infrastructure.

Where IP location data comes from

Providers build geolocation datasets from several signals: regional internet registry allocations, BGP routing data, ISP and organization information, network measurements, user-contributed corrections, commercial partnerships and historical observations. No single source is complete, so databases combine evidence and update it over time.

Registry data is especially useful for understanding who received an address block, but the registered organization or mailing address is not automatically the location where every address in that block is physically used.

Why two IP lookup sites can disagree

Different databases can assign the same IP to different cities because they use different evidence, update schedules, confidence models and fallback rules. One service may place an address at an ISP’s regional hub while another places it at a city centroid. A recently reassigned IP block can also remain associated with an older location until datasets catch up.

For operational decisions, country and ASN information is often more stable than exact city coordinates.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

There is no universal accuracy percentage that applies to every address. Accuracy depends on the country, ISP, access technology and granularity requested. Country-level results are generally more dependable than city-level results. Mobile carriers, satellite services, enterprise VPNs, carrier-grade NAT and privacy networks can make fine-grained location especially difficult.

A good interface should therefore present map coordinates as approximate. IPWander deliberately does this instead of implying that a marker identifies a building or device.

IP geolocation vs GPS

GPS and device-location APIs can use satellite, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and sensor information with user permission. IP geolocation does not have that device-level signal. It works from the network address alone. This makes IP geolocation easy to use server-side, but far less precise than a user-approved location service.
